◆ Turkey Berry (scientific name: Solanum torvum Swartz) is an evergreen shrub belonging to the genus Solanum of the family Solanaceae. It can bloom year-round with white flowers. The plant reaches 1 to 3 meters in height, bearing ovate to elliptical leaves 10–20 cm long with irregularly wavy margins. Its spherical berries have a diameter of 1–1.5 cm and turn yellow upon ripening, featuring high ornamental value. This variety thrives in warm and humid environments with an optimal growth temperature ranging from 20℃ to 30℃. It is waterlogging-tolerant and commonly grows alongside ditches and in wastelands. Turkey Berry boasts medicinal value and can serve as rootstock for grafting solanaceous vegetables. Nevertheless, the whole plant contains toxic solanine; its fruits look similar to small tomatoes and must not be eaten.
