Variety Key Traits:
• Solanum nigrum (Black Nightshade)
Solanum nigrum, known as European black nightshade or blackberry nightshade, is an annual herbaceous plant from the Solanaceae family. It features nearly hairless stems and alternate, ovate leaves. The small, nodding flowers are white or pale purple, followed by spherical, glossy berries that turn dark purple to black when ripe. The fruit, available from July to December, is tart and sweet, making it a tasty treat.
• Preferred Growing Conditions:
This plant thrives at temperatures between 22°C and 30°C , with an optimal fruiting temperature range of 15°C to 20°C . It prefers rich, well-draining soils with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. It can tolerate various soil conditions but performs best in soils high in organic matter, where it exhibits stronger growth and better fruit quality.
◆ Sowing Instructions:
1. Seed Preparation
Soak the Seeds: Soak the seeds in water for 6-12 hours to help soften the seed coat and improve germination.
Stratification (optional): If you experience poor germination, cold stratification may help. Place seeds in a moist paper towel, seal them in a plastic bag, and store in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
2. Sowing the Seeds
Timing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
Soil: Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. A mix of potting soil and compost works well.
Sowing Depth: Sow the seeds about 1/8 inch (3 mm) deep, as they need light to germinate.
Spacing: If sowing directly outdoors, space the seeds 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
3. Germination
Temperature: Keep the soil temperature between 20°C and 25°C (68℉ to 77℉ ) for best germination results.
Light: Seeds require light to germinate, so do not bury them deeply. Provide full sunlight or grow lights if indoors.
Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mist or water gently to avoid washing away the seeds.
Germination Time: Seeds usually germinate within 10-14 days.
4. Transplanting (If Started Indoors)
Hardening Off: Before transplanting outdoors, harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days.
Spacing: Space the seedlings about 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart in rows that are 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) apart.
