• Plant Characteristics: SeedChoiceX Chinese Skullcap is a perennial herb with branching stems, no or sparse upward soft hairs, and fleshy rhizomes. Its lanceolate or linear-lanceolate leaves are blunt at the tips, rounded at the base, with smooth edges and sparse soft hairs. The flowers are violet-red or blue, glandular-hairy, with a triangular-ovate lower lip segment. The fruits are blackish-brown, ovate-globose, with a basal navel-like protrusion. Flowering occurs from July to August, while fruiting occurs from August to September.
• Growing Conditions: Chinese Skullcap thrives in sunny, warm conditions and exhibits good drought tolerance and resistance to severe cold. It prefers soil that is neutral to slightly acidic, with a moderate amount of organic matter, and grows well in sandy soils.
• Traditional and Garden Uses: Chinese Skullcap is a vital ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine and is also a beautiful addition to gardens. Its violet-lipped blossoms attract pollinators, creating a stunning blue display. These low shrubs are ideal for hedge planting and can withstand dry conditions, making them versatile for various garden settings.
• Planting Instructions: Sow SeedChoiceX Chinese Skullcap Seeds in individual 2-inch pots or cell packs, lightly pressing them into the soil and covering them barely. Maintain a temperature of 65-70°F for germination, which usually occurs within 2-3 weeks. Alternatively, seeds can be directly sown in prepared seed beds, spacing them 6 seeds per foot in rows.
